Our 2026/2027 season opens with a celebration of the lower strings. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s String Quartet in B-Flat Major unfolds with effortless grace, featuring the cello as a soaring melodic voice, and Karen Sunabacka’s Ripples gently ebbs and flows between the viola and cello. Double bassist Anthony Manzo joins to close the program with Antonín Dvořák’s delightful String Quintet No. 2, a work that brings orchestral breadth and color to the intimate world of the string quartet.

The mysterious alchemy of an exquisite melody is a touch of genius that can evoke our most complex emotions. The bittersweet melodies of Franz Schubert’s ‘Rosamunde’ Quartet open this program in a world of beauty and longing. Caroline Shaw takes the fleeting inspiration of a moment of Haydn through her personal looking glass into a world of abstraction in Entr’acte, and Alexander Borodin’s beloved second string quartet abounds with effortless melodies from the opening movement through the stunning Nocturne that showcase his compositional virtuosity.

Exploring the nature of self is a timeless fascination that has yielded some of history’s most thought-provoking art. Harriet Steinke’s too bright to see is a powerful meditation on finding oneself amidst the noise of modern society. Eleanor Alberga’s String Quartet No. 1, both explosive and wondrous, draws inspiration from humanity’s deepest origins as stardust. The program closes with the gallant and eccentric String Quartet No. 2 of Robert Schumann, who famously used his music to give voice to two distinct personalities within himself.

Arnold Schoenberg | Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night), Op. 4
Experience the world premiere of Brittany J. Green’s atè a tè (Haitian creole: grounded; down to earth), a work that, in the composer’s words “explores what it means to ground oneself to the present and the community around you, how our grounding to one another shifts as we age, and how the mundane, like a pair of shoes by the door, can keep us present, remind us of what's important, and represent the connections we’ve made and lost.” This season closing concert will also feature the winner of our 4th annual Christine Kim Young Artist Award and Arnold Schoenberg’s epic and otherworldly Verklärte Nacht with special guests Jessica Thompson and Jia Kim.
